Driving to Donner Summit
Sugar Bowl, Boreal Mountain, Donner Ski Ranch, and Soda Springs all exit I-80 within a couple of miles of Donner Summit at Norden, about 45 minutes west of Reno and 1.5 to 2 hours from Sacramento in good conditions. They share one corridor: a major interstate with real services and cell coverage, and summit chain controls that can still bring weekend traffic to a halt.
Routes to Donner Summit
The approach from Sacramento and the Bay Area: I-80 east over Donner Summit to the Norden / Soda Springs exits (roughly exits 174-176), about 1.5 to 2 hours from Sacramento and 3 to 3.5 from the Bay Area in good conditions. High-volume interstate; chain controls typically stage at Applegate or Kingvale eastbound. Same status for all four resorts: they leave the freeway within the shared summit reach.
West Route live status →From Reno or Sparks: I-80 west through the Truckee River canyon and up the east side of Donner Summit to the same Norden exits, about 45 to 60 minutes in good conditions. You climb the summit from the Truckee side rather than the long west-side grade; canyon ice and summit controls can still slow or stop the drive.
East Route live status →The times above assume clear roads. In storms, chain controls, plow pacing, and closures can multiply them several times over: a drive that takes 2 hours on a clear day can take 6 or more on a bad one, and a full summit closure can erase the morning entirely.

Winter driving to Donner Summit
- Interstate corridor I-80 has frequent fuel and food from Colfax through Truckee, EV fast charging along the corridor, chain installers at the usual checkpoints, and generally good cell coverage. The hazard is volume plus summit weather, not isolation: controls go up here even when the valleys are clear, and R2 is the routine storm posting.
- Traffic Powder mornings and holiday weekends back up for miles at Kingvale and the Truckee scales. The resorts are only a few minutes apart once you leave the freeway; the wait is almost always on I-80 itself. Friday afternoon eastbound and Sunday afternoon westbound are the weekly peaks; leaving before 6 a.m. or after the evening peak misses the worst of both.
- The last mile differs Boreal has its own I-80 interchange. Sugar Bowl, Donner Ski Ranch, and Soda Springs sit on Donner Pass Road (Old US-40), the two-lane road over the summit, which can be gated in a storm while I-80 keeps running. Our status covers the interstate approaches all four share; check Old 40 itself before counting on it.
- Chains and gear During a storm, California can require tire chains to use the highway and enforces it at a checkpoint. It posts three lettered levels, R1 through R3; always obey posted signs.
- R1Chains required, except vehicles with snow tires on the drive wheels.
- R2Chains required on all vehicles except 4WD/AWD with snow tires on all four wheels.
- R3Chains on every vehicle, no exceptions.
- ChainsBuy a set that fits your tires before you leave; mountain-town stock sells out mid-storm and costs far more.
- TiresThe 4WD/AWD exemption needs snow tires (the M+S sidewall stamp) on all four wheels with real tread left, and officers at a control do check.
- ChecksSigns give you about a mile of warning before the checkpoint. Skipping an active control is a citable offense, and vehicles that do not comply are turned around.
- FittingInstall only at signed chain-control areas or turnouts, fully off the roadway. At the larger control points, permitted installers will fit or remove chains for cash; they cannot sell or rent them, so arrive with your own.
- TowingThe tow vehicle needs chains on a drive axle when controls are posted, and a trailer with brakes needs chains on one of its own axles.
- RentalsRead the agreement first; most rental companies prohibit chains, which makes an AWD or 4WD rental on M+S tires the practical way to clear an R2.
- If the road closes During active storms, a road can close with little warning, and it stays closed until conditions let crews clear it. A slide or a spinout can be cleared in under an hour; a full storm closure can hold overnight or for days.
