Driving to Granlibakken
Granlibakken Tahoe sits just south of Tahoe City off Hwy 89. Northern approaches share I-80 into Truckee and Hwy 89 to Tahoe City; from South Lake Tahoe you still have to clear Emerald Bay, so the short local finish does not make the southern approach a storm shortcut.
Routes to Granlibakken
The main approach from Sacramento and the Bay Area: I-80 over Donner Summit to Truckee, Hwy 89 to Tahoe City, about 2.25 hours from Sacramento and roughly 4 from the Bay Area in good conditions. Donner Summit is the crux; Granlibakken is a short local spur once you reach Tahoe City.
Donner Route live status →From Reno or Sparks: I-80 west through the Truckee River canyon to Truckee, then Hwy 89 to Tahoe City, about an hour in good conditions. You never climb the west side of Donner Summit; canyon ice and chain controls can still slow or stop the drive.
Reno Route live status →For drivers already in Truckee: Hwy 89 south to Tahoe City, about 20 to 30 minutes in good conditions. Short corridor hop with no summit of its own.
Truckee Route live status →For drivers starting from South Lake Tahoe: Hwy 89 up the West Shore past Emerald Bay to Tahoe City, about 45 to 60 minutes in good conditions when open. When Emerald Bay is closed, the fallback is the long way around the lake: US-50 up the East Shore and NV-28 to Kings Beach and Tahoe City. TahoeDrive does not monitor the East Shore, so check NVRoads before committing.
West Shore Route live status →The times above assume clear roads. In storms, chain controls, plow pacing, and closures can multiply them several times over: a drive that takes 3 hours on a clear day can take 8 or more on a bad one. These are the primary monitored approaches. Other ways in usually exist when one closes, but they are heavy detours on roads this report does not cover; verify them with the agency links below.

Winter driving to Granlibakken
- On I-80 Major interstate with frequent services and generally good cell; summit chain controls still decide the Donner Route on storm days.
- On Hwy 89 Truckee to Tahoe City is ordinary two-lane basin highway. The West Shore past Emerald Bay is the fragile leg; do not average it with Donner into one forecast.
- Services Truckee and Tahoe City cover fuel and food. Fill up before committing to Emerald Bay from the south.
- EV charging Fast charging clusters in Truckee, Tahoe City, and South Lake Tahoe, with none to count on along the West Shore in between. Winter range runs well below rated, so top up before the last leg.
- Cell service Generally usable in Truckee and Tahoe City; expect weak or absent signal along the Emerald Bay stretch if you come from the south. Check the live report and save directions before you leave South Lake Tahoe.
- Chains and gear During a storm, California can require tire chains to use the highway and enforces it at a checkpoint. It posts three lettered levels, R1 through R3; always obey posted signs.
- R1Chains required, except vehicles with snow tires on the drive wheels.
- R2Chains required on all vehicles except 4WD/AWD with snow tires on all four wheels.
- R3Chains on every vehicle, no exceptions.
- ChainsBuy a set that fits your tires before you leave; mountain-town stock sells out mid-storm and costs far more.
- TiresThe 4WD/AWD exemption needs snow tires (the M+S sidewall stamp) on all four wheels with real tread left, and officers at a control do check.
- ChecksSigns give you about a mile of warning before the checkpoint. Skipping an active control is a citable offense, and vehicles that do not comply are turned around.
- FittingInstall only at signed chain-control areas or turnouts, fully off the roadway. At the larger control points, permitted installers will fit or remove chains for cash; they cannot sell or rent them, so arrive with your own.
- TowingThe tow vehicle needs chains on a drive axle when controls are posted, and a trailer with brakes needs chains on one of its own axles.
- RentalsRead the agreement first; most rental companies prohibit chains, which makes an AWD or 4WD rental on M+S tires the practical way to clear an R2.
- If the road closes During active storms, a road can close with little warning, and it stays closed until conditions let crews clear it. A slide or a spinout can be cleared in under an hour; a full storm closure can hold overnight or for days.
